... you can learn from:
Donnie: Well, could these portals, um...Could these portals just appear anywhere, anytime?Prof. Monnitoff: I think that's highly unlikely. No, I think what you're talking about is an act of God.Donnie: Well if God controls time then all time is pre-decided.Prof. Monnitoff: I'm not following you.
Donnie: Every living thing follows along a set path. And if you could see your path or channel, then you couldsee into the future, right? Like, uh... It's a form of time travel.Prof. Monnitoff: Well, you're-you're contradictingyourself there, Donnie. If we were able to see our destiniesmanifest themselves visually, then we would be given a choiceto betray our chosen destinies. And the mere fact thatthis choice exists would make all preformed destiny,uh, come to an end.
Donnie: Not if you travel within God's channel.Prof. Monnitoff: Um, I'm not going to be ableto continue this conversation.Donnie: Why?Prof. Monnitoff: I could lose my job.
You might think that I devoted this week's banner to Frank in Donnie Darko because it was Easter yesterday and he's the greatest rabbit ever put in the movies, but you'd only be half-right - today also happens to be writer-director Richard Kelly's birthday (he's turning 41) and so that's the other 50% of it.
Seriously though, what has happened to Richard Kelly? He hasn't written or directed a single thing since The Box in 2009 and yes that movie was a mess but not a big enough mess to make me not want to see him keep trying! Speaking of, I need to sit back down and re-watch Southland Tales very soon, dammit. And I hope you're working on something and it's something awesome, Mr. Kelly. Come roaring back with a vengeance, please! (Also remind me that Donnie Darko turns 15 in October, we should obviously do something.)
