Remember that time Jake Gyllenhaal got half-naked with Bear Grylls in a snowstorm? That was a fun time. Anyway on that note my office is closing up shop because of the big storm currently slamming into us, and I am off to either 1) get naked with Jake Gyllenhaal & Bear Grylls, or 2...

I didn't see War Dogs - because oh my god why would I have seen War Dogs? - so I can't tell you how big Bradley Cooper's role was in that, but seeing as how he's listed way way way down the page on IMDb I am guessing small. And War Dogs is the only live-action movie that bradley Cooper has acted in since Joy in 2015! He's done voice-work as Rocket the Raccoon in the Guardians movie of course, and he was on that Limitless television show some I guess.

But it's been a B-Coop quiet couple of years. He couldn't even be bothered to show up in the Wet Hot American Summer show and had to be replaced by Adam Scott, which they played to humorous effect. I know he's working on his Big Serious Comeback as the writer slash director slash co-star of Lady Gaga in the A Star in Born remake, which just recently got an Awards Season push to next fall, so they're clearly gunning for attention with it. And he had a baby, or something.

So I am sure we'll hear all the PR Spin soon enough, probably starting over the next couple of months, on What Bradley Cooper Has Been Up To, all the serious Career Reassessment jibber jabber, oh boy, can't wait. Anyway I've always like B-Coop, since he made Sweet Sweet Summer Camp Love with Michael Ian Black in the original Wet Hot and since he was Sidney's Sexy Bestie on Alias. So let's hope he can remind us of that soon. Today's his 43rd birthday so wish him a happy one by hitting the jump to stare at another dozen of these gifs from the 2009 rom-com  He's Just Not That Into You...

The Hot Gay Dumbledore We Need

I've spent so much time flinching about Johnny Depp's presence whenever the Fantastic Beasts sequel's come up that I keep forgetting to rejoice over the fact that Jude Law is playing the young hot bearded gay version of Hary Potter's wizarding daddy Albus Dumbledore. The first pictures showed up a few days ago, as seen here - any idea who the suave nerd is standing behind him up above? There are several possibilities in the cast list. Whoever it is that's who Dumbledore oughta be rubbing wands with, not Depp's grimy Grindelwald, blecch. (click to embiggen)

--- Into the Spider's Web - Fede Alvarez is gathering up a pretty hot cast for his reboot of the Lisbeth Salander franchise - Clarie Foy is taking over for Rooney Mara and we already oogled Daniel Craig's replacement the Swedish sex-ball that is Sverrir Gudnason; more recently added are Sylvia Hoeks, who was the only thing I liked in the new Blade Runner movie, and now here comes the super Lakeith Stanfield, who'll play a NSA computer expert dude who's chasing down our leading punk lassie. See a bunch of pictures of Lakeith right here, if you like.

--- A Haunting in Brooklynn - We told you with some enthusiasm last month about the forthcoming film The Turning, a new version of Henry James' classic ghost tale The Turning of the Screw that will star spectacular Mackenzie Davis in the role of the nanny and Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard as one of her charges. Well here's some wonderful new news - Brooklynn Prince, the little girl who gave it her all + then some in The Florida Project (my review here), has signed on to play the other kid trusted to Mackenzie's care.

--- The Joy You've Felt - I've kind of had to give up on keeping y'all up with Call Me By Your Name links because I am but one man, and while I read it all, I cannot keep track of it all. And it's not like I don't do enough rambling of my damn own anyway. But if you missed Interview Magazine's chat with Papa Love himself Michael Stuhlbarg about the crafting of his already classic scene in the movie, you shouldn't. Read it over here. Oh Papa.

--- Say It With Streep - Oh this is a thrill - a new series has premiered this week at The Film Experience where John Guerin and Matthew Eng will be chatting about the world's most beloved actressing icon, Miss Meryl Streep - they'll be going through each and every one of her films, a week at a time. This week they tackled her first movie Julia, which threw her opposite no less than screen icons Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave. I have never seen Julia, have you? Anyway I'm looking forward to the 90s Comedy portion of this series, myself.

--- Fix Your Heart or Die - One of the aspects of David Lynch's storytelling that is continually overshadowed and under-valued is his kindness, and so it was a lovely thing to read this long-form ode to the astonishing empathy of Twin Peaks and by extension pretty much all of his work. (thanks Mac) Particularly important I think is how it slaps us a little silly for continually attempting to divorce The Elephant Man and The Straight Story from lynch's oeuvre since they don't cleanly fit the narrative of what we think of when we think of Lynchian. In related news I watch the recent doc on Lynch over the weekend and don't miss it! And then you might as well re-watch all 18 hours of the new Twin Peaks again because there is literally nothing better to do. Literally.

--- Strangers Things - I'm kind of disappointed that the sequel to 2008's terrific The Strangers didn't end up happening with the original team - former director Bryan Bertino has a credit on the script, but otherwise it's all new faces both behind and in front of the screen. It doesn't help that the sequel's actors Christina Hendricks and Martin Henderson, both of whom I like perfectly fine mind you, feel like lower-wattage replacements for Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. If it hadn't taken an entire decade to get made I'd say it feels like a cash in, but since it did take an entire decade I don't know how to feel. I guess we'll see in march when it's out - for now, the trailer!

One Good Thing To Say About Justice League

I railed againstJustice League on Twitter while watching it last night (don't @ me about tweeting instead of paying attention when tweeting was the only thing keeping me watching) and you can read those tweets here, but I will say one thing in its defense - I am far more likely to want a movie about The Flash now after watching it then I was before. Ezra Miller was far and away the only good thing going on in the film.

Yes all of his dialogue consisted of jarringly-crammed-in Joss-isms, but Ezra sold 'em better than anybody else managed. (Oh my god that moment when Henry Cavill's typically mopey Superman suddenly had a laughing fit at the end felt so forced I should have called the police.) Even poor wonderful Gal Gadot was led astray (and Jason Momoa was trying way too hard). But Ezra was super...

... and most importantly of all his ass looked absolutely tremendous in his costume, so I say bring on The Flash! Or Flashpoint or whatever they're calling it. (Call it The Flash, you dopes.) And you can see more shots from this Ezra photo-shoot over on the Tumblr.

The first full-length trailer for Red Sparrow, Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming sexy espionage thriller with her Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, premiered during the Globes last night - we had already seen a teaser back in September that alerted us to the whole "Joel Edgerton in itty bitty swim-trunks" thing, of which we took note, but knowing the film also co-stars Matthias Schoenaerts we were annoyed he was nowhere to be seen. Now he's seen!

Matty's actually all over this new longer trailer, even getting his own name card, which brings us no shortness of pleasure and joy. Watch:

Red Sparrow is based on an entire series of books by Jason Matthews - I'm guessing if this does well our J-Law might have herself her own little Lady Bond (Lady Bourne?) series of sorts. Is Charlotte Rampling her M? Anyway it's out on March 2nd - hit the jump for a couple more gratuitous gifs of various menfolk in the trailer if you care...

All Signs Point To Woody

Out of all the possible movies that are in the running for Best Picture this year Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is my second least favorite of the bunch. (Here's my review in case you missed it.) That doesn't mean I think it's the second worst film of the year, mind you - I would certainly say that Three Billboards is a better movie than, say, Baywatch. There are a couple of things about it that I think are outright good, even - for instance I think Samara Weaving is hilariously funny as John Hawke's new girlfriend Penelope (her comic timing is impeccable).

And I also think Woody Harrelson is very strong in the film - I'd actually, blasphemy of blasphemies, rank his work higher than Frances McDormand's in the movie, and I say that as a firm disciple of Franny's from way back. Anyway to make a long something longer this week's "Beauty vs Beast" contest at The Film Experience is tackling Three Billboards via my favorite performance in the movie and my least favorite performance in the movie, so head on over and vote and please do the right thing just this once just for me...

"Shy tendrils of russet pleasure
began their unbidden journey..."

RING RING RING

"Yes?"

"IT IS NOT. GOING. WELL!!!"

My Best Friend's Wedding came out in 1997 (yes we celebrated its 20th last year) so this joke about getting a cell phone call in a quiet setting was actually pretty fresh when they trotted it out here as the romantically diabolical Julianne (Julia Roberts) calls her gay bestie George (Rupert Everett) mid rom-com chase to get some much-needed straight talk from a gay man.

The film reliance on now twenty-year-old technologies that were fresh at the time -- email sabotage! -- is adorably dated now, but PJ Hogan really leans into it and finds clever uses for cell phones throughout; the final scene where Rupert's call IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE WEDDING is now a classic as far as I am concerned...

"But by god there'll be dancing."

But I love the scene where she calls him at this ridiculous poetry reading because it's one of just two glimpses we get of George's life away from Julianne - he is apparently the type of man who will go to a bookstore to hear Harry Shearer talk about "shy tendrils of russet pleasure" here, and a little earlier there's the scene where Julianne calls his house mid-fancy-dinner and leaves (dated technology alert!) a screaming message on his answering machine...

... where we're given the quickest glimpse of his boyfriend...

Not bad, George! Not bad at all.

Back to the bookstore though: I love that there is a copy of How to Dress Well perched on his shoulder there. George is such a fancy man. Circa 1997 anyway. Anyway I remember watching this movie in 1997 and lapping up all of these minuscule details about George's life - I know it seems kind of crazy now but a gay character in a great big Julia Roberts mainstream rom-com really was still pretty damn novel at the time. The trope of "The Gay Best Friend" wore out its welcome fairly quickly, but it was a necessary step to inclusion. Gay Men as Relationship Experts? Okay! Sure!

I know it's kind of a depressing day for those of us who love Call Me By Your Name, after seeing it all get shut out at the Globes last night, and that's fine - even with my cynicism towards awards shows I too would love to see glittering golden statues in the hands of every single person who gave us this astonishing piece of art. But the art is astonishing and the art is forever, and that is the most important thing. Hold this beautiful movie close to your heart and cherish it, no matter what happens over the next couple of months. The way it makes you feel, the wisdom it imparts, that has already changed you and become a part of you. One day twenty years from now you're going to be walking through a park and see the sunlight catch something and there you'll be, back "Somewhere in Northern Italy" again, with Sufjan singing inside your head and Elio and Oliver standing before you, reenacting their timeless romance...

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way because this post has gotten some likes, but it's also gotten some horrified reactions - several of them specifically aimed at the character's candy chewing, and I love that THAT is the straw that breaks the camel's back, not, you know, his monstrous sadism (seriously I'm not being facetious, I love that) - so I figured I would put it up to a poll this morning!

And if you want a NSFW gif of him in the movie hit the jump...

Good Afternoon, Gratuitous Louis Hunter

Way back in July I saw the sort-of horror-film The Honor Farm for the Fantasia Film Festival and I told you in my review of that movie to "google Louis Hunter immediately." Well if you didn't I did, it just took me six months. (The Honor Farm is even available to stream on Amazon now, by the way.) Louis has been a little active on his Instagram lately and reminded me to do so, and here we are.

Louis (who has done some TV like that Secret Circle show a couple years ago) doesn't have a ton lined up, at least according to IMDb - for a dude this pretty he oughta have more. Come on, casting directors! So in hopes that these catch somebody's eye which then leads to us seeing more of him let's hit the jump for a couple dozen pictures over lunch...

That is Louis with (openly gay) actor Thomas Dekker in the last shot - Dekker wrote and directed a movie called Jack Goes Home in 2016 that co-starred Louis, and they seem pretty friendly...

Also Thomas included this shot of Louis in his movie:

... so bless them.
Bless them both!

It's Tuesday and you know what that means - yes, that we will See You Next Tuesday, but before then let's go ahead and do what we do each week on this day (as long as we're being productive) and hit up our "Siri Says" series. If you're new here's what is happening - we ask the voice that lives inside of our telephone to give us a number between 1 and 100, and then we pick our 5 favorite movies form the year that corresponds with that number. So today she gave us the number "78" and so today we will pick our favorite movies from The Movies of 1978. And a fun time will be had by all!

I managed to come up with my five favorites from this year pretty easily - they're probably exactly what you think they would be if you've spent more than five minutes here at MNPP - but what surprised me, looking through this year's films, was how many 1978 movies I have heard good things about but never seen. So that portion of our list below is longer than normal, and I guess I have some work to do. Until then, let's see what we have here...
