It Keeps Itting Itself

I guess at some point I won't have a daily post about a Hot Person joining the cast of the It sequel, but that day is not today my friends -- It: Chapter 2has just added the ginger-heaven seen above (via) named Teach Grant (google him and see how many "teaching grants" come up before he does). Grant will play the adult version of the bully Henry Bowers, played by Nicholas Hamilton in Chapter One...

My memory is hella foggy on what happens with Bowers in the grown-up world of the story, but they also hired an actress to play his wife and she's great - it's Jess Weixler, who should've gotten ALL the work after Teeth came out in 2007. Anyway Weixler is well-known to be Jessica Chastain's BFF, which brings the percentage of people working on this movie who have some sort of connection to Chastain (former co-star James McAvoy, former directors Xavier Dolan and Andy Muschietti) to like fifty-three-thousand percent...

Cheers to Kathy Bates

One of our finest living actresses Kathy Bates is turning 70 later this week, and so you should head on over to The Film Experience for this week's "Beauty vs Beast" - yup, it's a Dolores Claiborne-off. Anyway Stephen King being so hot right now I hope all the people adapting him look back to this movie once in awhile to see how it's done. It's a prime and under-rated example.

Timothée Chalamet and his hardcore bowl-cut (I smell a fashion trend ahead!) is currently filming The King -- his Shakespeare adaptation with Animal Kingdom director David Michôd -- in the town of Lincoln, about three hours north of London, and we've got our first view of him on the set there via the film's Twitter page. They seem to be all over it though so if you're at all the sort of nerd-stalker who cares about this stuff (I speak from experience) I recommend you follow that Twitter account. And congrats to Timothée for getting invited to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences today! You can read the full list of new Oscar voters right here at this here link. We celebrated with a nice photo-shoot of Timmy on the Tumblr, too.

I had intended to focus on Montgomery Clift among the book-shelves in this scene from Suddenly Last Summer -- because duh, Montgomery Clift -- but then I saw the part...

... where Liz Taylor puts a lit cigarette out on a nun...

... and I changed my mind.
As one does with such astonishments.

Point Liz.
Monty would understand.

Jurassic World 2 in 200 Words or Less

Given our history I really shouldn't be walking out of Jurassic World (née Park) movies with as little an opinion either way as I walked out of the second Jurassic World movie this weekend. At least I walked out of the first one angry - I walked out of this one with a shrug. There was some beautiful film-making on display from director J.A. Bayona - some truly gorgeous and memorable shots, like the Brachiosaurus on the end of the dock or the one that twisted upside down and over the rooftop with the Whatever-a-saurus-raptor thing.

Individual moments deliver. But I just don't know what these movies are in service to anymore, at least not unless I allow myself the entirely cynical answer of "money" -- which is obviously the end-game for many, very many, people involved with these movies. But not all. Or so one would hope? But I just don't get it, whatever it is. There's a tactility missing now - I think these movies really needed the grounding that the very last gasp of practical effects gave them, and now that we can see these computer-generated whatever do whatever it's whatever.

You guys will have to tell me if you're familiar with Alex Harrouch, an actor from Degrassi:The Next Generation who is turning 26 today - I don't know him but he was mentioned on Twitter earlier and since I am running behind this morning I figured hey, do what the people do. He played a "young driver" in an episode of The Handmaid's Tale (which is funny because he reminds me of Max Minghella a little) so I guess I have seen him in something - he was also in the movie calledHow to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town, which is a movie that gave us a great big beautiful batch of Mark O'Brien gifs that one time, so clearly that's a movie we're glad exists, good or not. Speaking of here are some gifs of the birthday boy after the jump...

Here is a glorious sentence that I get to speak today to curb the real-world blues a smidge: the Criterion blu-ray of Female Trouble is out now! The disc is gorgeous - I've had it at home for a week and it hasn't come out of the blu-ray player once in that time. I've still somehow managed to hold off on watching all of the special features just yet though - I want to make them last. But what I've watched so far has been toe-tickling. And the restoration of the film itself is so fancy even the Dashers would be impressed. No rats are gonna bite these new nylons! Go buy it now or risk living the sick and boring life of a heterosexual. You wouldn't want that!

That picture has everything - beards, bookshelves, a member of Radiohead, the man who put the words "That is a giant cock" in Julianne Moore's mouth. Everything! It's the perfect way to celebrate Paul Thomas Anderson's 48th birthday today - well the second most perfect way, the first most perfect way being whatever Maya Rudolph did for PTA this morning.

And in case you're wondering what the third best way is, it is to buy yourself a ticket to the screening of the 2015 documentary called Junun that PTA directed about Jonny Greenwood there  when it screens in Brooklyn next month, which I just did! I think it's sold out already though, so if you missed it you'll have to once again live vicariously through me. Wha ah ah!

This scene is from the 2007 British TV movie
called Clapham Junction - anybody seen it?

I have not but I'm about to, you can believe that.
I mean even besides what I have just shown you...

... it also contains a scene where Maurice
stars James Wilby and Rupert Graves reunite to
wave their dicks at each other at a public urinal.

Just as James Ivory intended!

I tend to notice that our paragraphs here on the site get smaller, word-wise, when the world's especially shitty, so it shouldn't surprise anybody that this week's been a ten-word-at-a-time kinda experience. It's difficult to focus with things so lousy. I have about a dozen reviews I should be writing but I can barely manage with the dinosaur franchise for god's sake, which oughta be a wank - oh well. I'm just gonna go see Enver Gjokaj on stage tonight and try to gather some wits. Have a nice night, everybody. (pic via)

It was Chris O'Donnell's birthday yesterday and we just happened to have the 1996 John Grisham adaptation called The Chamberon our computer for the most recent "Five Frames From" post... so here, two birds one stone. And... I have nothing else to say. I've never seen this movie nor have I ever found Chris O'Donnell the slightest bit compelling to watch on-screen. This one's for... whoever it's for, then. I know you there. Hit the jumpfor a couple more...

Raise your hand if you just had to shield your face from a co-worker who just walked into your office because you'd just finished watching the Beautiful Boy trailer and you were literally doubled over at your desk having some sort of miniature emotional break down, choking with tears streaming down your face...

If you could see me then you'd know... yes my hand is up, but also you should probably steer clear of me... I'm a fucking wreck. Anyway the Beautiful Boy trailer is here and if it is any indication of what Timmy's done again then that boy should have gold in his future. Should. Should, that is. He should have gold in his recent past but we saw how that went. Anyway, trailer!

Pitt Goes Full Redford

Brad Pitt's always felt like The Robert Redford Movie Star Modern Day Edition, so much so that they've acted in movies together and wink winked at us like, gotcha, so seeing Brad done up in Full Redford in this here the first picture of him and some dude named Leo in costume for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, aka QT's Charlie Manson movie, makes sense. Here's what THR says about their characters:

"The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (DiCaprio), former star of a Western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don't recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor… Sharon Tate."

Sharon Tate is being played by Margot Robbie, and from there there's that cast of thousands. (And which got a sharp clap-back for being hella caucasian earlier this week, in case you missed it, and... yup. Good point.) Anyway because I'm bored I'll ask this... .

That there is our first look at Kristen Wiig playing the villain-to-be in the second Wonder Woman movie, which has been titled Wonder Woman 1984. I think that means it's set in 1984. I am smart. Also I guess just look at KW's outfit:

Totally Eighties Ladies. Anyway my hometown gal is playing "Barbara Minerva" who will turn into the villain Cheetah - I believe she will start off as a friend of Diana's? Their complications will have complications, no doubt. Anyway I know she's probably going to play the character at a more normal register than her comedy tends to lean into but I really want her to go Full Swanson at some point, tone be damned...
