There Will Be No Leftovers
It only took 14 years but Eli Roth has finally gone and made Thanksgiving, the slasher movie that he made a fake trailer for 2007's Grindhouse experience. You remember, when Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez sandwiched their films Death Proof (masterpiece) and Planet Terror together into a double-feature extravaganza, complete with fake trailers and goofy advertisements? Since I had the hots for Eli at the time I was rather excited that his trailer had him in his underwear. You can watch that old trailer here, but the actual movie he made -- which stars Patrick Dempsey...
... (looking hot) and Gina Gershon and a bunch of young people I have no reference for (although I did post a photo of Disney cutie Milo Mannheim's armpits on Twitter earlier this week) -- has an actual trailer today! Thanksgiving is out on November 17th, just in time for, you guessed it, two weeks after Halloween. Anyway this looks like a lot of fun for those of us who love slasher movies and is maybe the movie that Roth was born to make, so I'm excited dammit. Watch:

Hello My Concubine!
Here is some exciting news -- a new 4K restoration of Kaige Chen's lush 1993 masterpiece Farewell My Concubine is getting released this month! It's also an "uncut" version, with twenty extra minutes. It's first premiering at TIFF but a week after that it hits Film Forum here in NYC, and then it travels around the usual suspect cites from there. You can see all of the dates and places over here. If you've never seen this lush epic starring Gong Li and Leslie Cheung you're in for a treat -- here's how they describe the plot:
"In Chen Kaige's adaptation of the Lilian Lee novel, Cheng Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) and Duan Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) grow up enduring the harsh training of the Peking Opera Academy, where instructors regularly beat the students to instill in them the discipline needed to master the complex physical and vocal techniques of this ancient art. As the two boys mature, they develop complementary talents: Dieyi, with his fine, delicate features, assumes the female roles while Xiaolou plays masculine warlords. Their dramatic identities become real for Dieyi when he falls in love with Xiaolou, who fails to fully reciprocate Dieyi’s affections and marries a courtesan, Juxian (Gong Li), creating a dangerous, jealousy-filled romantic triangle. Spanning 50 years from the early 20th century to the tumultuous Cultural Revolution, Kaige's passionate, exquisitely shot film captures the vast historical scope of a changing country (and the mesmerizing pageantry of the opera) while also revealing the intimate and touching details of a unique, tender, heartrending love story. "
And here's the trailer:
I haven't seen this in a very long time so I'm pretty excited about this
myself. You can never go wrong with Gong Li and Leslie Cheung.

My Big Hot Greek
Hello to you, reader, and hello to actor Elias Kacavas, seen above, as well -- Elias is in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 out this weekend, which I reviewed today for Mashable, read that here. He's adorable, and there is a ridiculously gratuitous shirtless scene in the movie, if that's enough to get you to go beyond my mixed review of the movie itself. Anyway that aside I'm running late today -- I had a screening this morning yadda yadda not sure how much I'll get to. Let's see what happens! It's like an adventure! For nobody involved!

Christopher Abbott Nine Times
Okay I was feeling a little down earlier, and then these photos of Christopher Abbott photographed by Ryan McGinley for Interview Magazine appeared (thx Mac) and -- nothing about me is down no more. Up up up and away, baby. The chat is with his On the Count of Three and Poor Things friend and co-star (and fortunate homosexual) Jerrod Carmichael and I'm only a little ways through it -- my main priority was as ever to get these photos to you people as quickly as possible. If the chat contains anything delicious we'll come back and discuss it. For now hit the jump as this photo-shoot is nothing but non-stop deliciousness...

Rot This
That there is Rotting in the Sunstar and homosexual influencer Jordan Firstman summing up "Today's Mood" pretty well (especially after seeing those Christopher Abbott photos earlier) and so it's convenient Rotting in the Sun is out in theaters today -- two stones, one bird, or whatever. I saw the movie, from nasty baby director Sebastián Silva, back during Sundance at the start of this year -- you can read my review right here. It's nihilistic and mean spirited and horny and I happily slobber down every inch of it. And if you're not in a place where the movie's in theaters, do not fret -- it hits Mubi next week. And see all of my previous posts on the movie, which include the trailer and the noted-boner poster (I so need a copy of the poster), over here. I maintain that Silva is making movies today that feel dangerous and weird and gay as fuck like John Waters and Gregg Araki were back in the day -- viva cinema!

Good Morning, World
Happy Monday (or should I say "Montag") morning from gay German actor Clemens Schick (via) -- haven't had the chance to post about him since I did that great big gratuitous post on him in 2017 so I thank him for sharing this photo on his Insta. Looking at his IMDb I see he's been playing a character called "Ham" on the Star Wars series Andor? Mkay.Sure why not. I have heard good things about Andor -- I am wildly indifferent to Star Wars but maybe I should give it a go? I do love Diego Luna...

Quote of the Day
"It’s a love story between two men set in the 30s that has explicit sexual content that or at least it challenges you with the sexual relationship between these two men. One is a Native American character and one is a corrupt cop in LA. It’s set in the 30s. They have to flee L.A. ultimately and go to Mexico. But it’s a love story and with a strong sexual component. And what was so remarkable is that it all started with Joaquin having some ideas and some thoughts and just questions and images. And he came to me and said, “Does this connect to you at all?” And I was like, “Yeah, this is really interesting.” And so we would just be on the phone talking and it developed into a script... [Joaquin] He had fragments of ideas and then I started to formulate them into an actual narrative. And then I brought my wonderful, brilliant friend John Raymond, with whom I collaborated with on “Mildred Pierce” into the process. Basically it was just this wonderful, organic way to create the script. And Joaquin was pushing it further into more dangerous territory, sexually."
That is the legendary Todd Haynes, director of Far From Heaven and Velvet Goldmine and Carol and the forthcoming (opening NYFF in a few weeks!) May December, dropping the deets on his next project, a "sexually explicit" gay romance starring Joaquin Phoenix, to Variety. Read the whole thing here, although the rest of it is mainly about May December and you might not want to read all of that if you are like me and haven't seen that movie yet. I find it super interesting that Joaquin is being all, "Gimme some gay sex, Todd!" But then I remember who his brother was...
... and it's maybe not so weird. Has Joaquin played gay before? Now that I think about it -- wasn't he in talks to do Brokeback back in the day? Anyway good for him, get that dick, Joaquin. I'm sure Rooney won't mind. Todd does say they don't know who will play the Native American half of the couple -- that they'll probably find an unknown -- but Todd, Todd, Todd! Martin Sensmeier is standing right there! (See my big post on Martin Sensmeier right here.) Somebody get Martin Sensmeier's agent Todd Haynes' phone number immediately!

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...
... you can learn from:
Days of Being Wild (1990)
Yuddy: I used to think there was a kind of bird that, once born, would keep flying until death. The fact is that the bird hasn't gone anywhere. It was dead from the beginning.
The great Leslie Cheung would have turned 67 today.

A Horror Festival Grows in Brooklyn
I doubt anyone noticed but I am not covering TIFF this year, which is happening right now -- my work-load for the past couple of years, where I was in festivals from late July (starting with Fantasia) through the end of October (NewFest) did me in (considering I also have a full-time day-job) and I decided a little bit of a break would be a good idea. And since NYFF is my most beloved fest of them all and TIFF overlapped with that one the most, TIFF got the axe. Maybe I'll try to be that person again next year but I gotta say my brain is thanking me right now. NYFF screenings start next week (I talked about the line-up right here) and (to get to the point) today we've gotten the line-up for my other hometown fave, the Brooklyn Horror Fest which runs from October 12th through 19th (aka right as NYFF ends). Check it out right here. The Opening Night movie...
... is called Kill Your Lover and it's from directors Alix Austin and Kier Siewert and it's described as a body-horror break-up movie and I am down down down. Other highlights out of what I have already seen -- the Centerpiece Film is the deeply disturbed serial killer thriller Red Rooms I reviewed at Fantasia right here; they're showing the gay revenge movie Femme with George Mackay that I reviewed right here; they're showing Booger (a mental breakdown flick about a missing cat that must be seen to be believed) and Satan Wants You (a superb doc on the "Satanic Panic" scare of the 1980s) and Vincent Must Die (a stellar French thriller about a weird rage virus). I have seen all of those and they are all terrific!
And as usual they are including a kick-ass retrospective of older movies -- the Japanese horror Door! The new restoration of Messiah of Evil! An award ceremony for Maniac Cop and director William Lustig! It's gonna be another year of killer frights out in Brooklyn -- here is the link to the full line-up again; badges are on sale right now and individual tickets go on sale on Friday. Oh and here is the just released trailer for the Messiah of Evil restoration:

Pledge Allegiance To My Heart
The second song from Sufjan Stevens' new record Javelin -- see my previous post here -- was dropped this morning, along with a video, seen above. The song is called "Will Anybody Ever Love Me?" and as that title implies it's a heartbreaker. Sigh! So was the previous song -- this album's really sounding like it's a break-up record at this point -- I hope you're okay, Sufjan! If you need an anything to nuzzle, I have lots of anythings. You can read more about the new song here and pre-order Javelin right here -- it's out on October 6th!

Louis Garrel Four Times
Normally I would say something here about how Louis Garrel is wearing too many clothes in these photos (via, thx Mac) -- but I'm so over summer and heat and humidity that photoshoots about sweaters and coats are my current fetish. Okay okay I can always get off on a nice sweater, it's true. But there's something especially erotic about one in September. And it's Louis Garrel -- don't get me wrong, I love seeing Louis Garrel naked. But it's his face and his hair that are Louis' great calling card. It's not like we're being forced to stare at Chris Hemsworth in a bulky coat here -- that's a crime punishable by death. Hit the jumpfor the rest...
