François Arnaud Ten Times

Not to steal the movie's thunder (because it is a good movie) but my latest review out of Tribeca is for a film called Permission - you can read the review over at The Film Experience - which stars Dan Stevens and Rebecca Hall (who's celebrating her birthday today - happy day, Becky!) and Gina Gershon and also this here quite lovely chap called François Arnaud. We knew who François was going in - he co-starred opposite Xavier Dolan in I Killed My Mother...
.
.
... and he was on The Borgias and we have posted pictures of him previously. Anyway the movie, being good, has a lot of things to recommend it, but François really pops and if I know you guys I know that this is probably my best way of convincing you to see the movie. Meaning...
.
.
... that. That is the best way to convince you to see the movie. And with such thoughts on our minds I might as well share a few bonus pictures of François so hit the jump for those...

Today I'd rather be...

... catching some rays with Nev Schulman.

I really don't know where the internet keeps finding these things (besides Nev putting them onto the internet himself, of course) but I'm glad fatherhood hasn't mellowed his exhibitionist tendencies - there's nobody else serving up this kind of hairiness right now and I need my fix unfettered.

Say Hello To The One Take Film Festival

Well this is a post that warms my cold dead heart - one of my oldest bestest real-world friends who goes by the name of Bri Merkel has co-created a film festival in my hometown of Rochester, New York! It's called the One Take Film Festival, and it's an expansion of a year-round documentary series that she's been running along with film-maker Linda Moroney. The series runs from May 18th to the 21st at the Little Theater there in Rochester (hey I worked there in college) and you can read an interview with them about it right here. You should also follow the Fest on Twitter and Facebook and such!

And you wanna talk knocking it out of the park right out of the gate - they're giving their first Double Take Vanguard Award to no less than Steve James! They're screening both his 1994 masterpiece Hoop Dreams (one of my favorite films of all time) and his terrific latest doc called Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, which I reviewed at the NYFF this past fall. You can see the whole schedule right here - Rochester is a terrific town for movies (it is where Film was born in the US, after all) so I'd say this is worth a trip up there. Oh and the fest is also showcasing VR technology, which speaking of...
.
A post shared by Jason Adams (@jasonaadams) on

... last week at Tribeca I took advantage of their VR showcase and went and... well you can't say "watched" because it's more than that, but I went and experienced a "film" called Broken Night, which starred Alessandro Nivola and Emily Mortimer as a couple besieged by an intruder. Depending on which way you turn your head while watching the actors acting in front of you you Choose-Your-Own-Adventure through a story-line (obviously I always followed Alessandro) - it was really quite something.

It's only the second VR I've ever experienced - I also got to see Bjork's 360 degree "Stonemilker" video awhile back - and the tech's so fresh and overwhelming to me I don't quite know how to "review" it, but it's a lot of fun to plunk yourself down in. I'm definitely planning on doing a better job taking advantage of the technology next year.

I didn't really sit up and take notice of The Defenders trailer until that shot of Charlie in one of his typically obscenely tailored suit-shirts appeared, and then I was All In. Of course then Sigourney showed up and I was All In Squared. (If only they'd shown Charlie and Mike Colter making out... then I'd be All In Quadrupled.) Until then, here's that trailer!
.

.
It looks fun, although I'm already worried that this means I have to go run home and plow through Iron Fist, which I just went ahead and skipped after the terrible reviews - do I have to watch it? Any opinions? I have so so many other things to catch up on right now...
.
.
Anyway in related news I stumbled on some pictures of Charlie coming home from the gym the other day that I am like 95% sure I totally missed before even though they're supposedly a year old? That seems impossible, but then again my head being up my own ass is always possible. Always. Hit the jump for a few more...

That's quite the poster there, The Bad Batch! (I'm guessing there are other character posters for the film but I'm feeling too lazy to look them up right now... and why bother, none will top Jason Momoa.) Anyway if you missed the trailer click here. And here's Jason clambering about half-naked via his Instagram just cuz why not:

When in doubt (aka when I'm not sure of what else to post) it seems I can just go and find a quick shot of Jamie Dornan flashing some flesh in the Fifty Shades movies that I've not posted previously and that'll let me off the hook. I haven't even gotten to the extended workout sequence in this piece of crap yet! (thanks Mac)

Endless Tribeca Finds Its End

My final review from Tribeca is up -- head on over to The Film Experience to read my thoughts on The Endless, the new movie from the filmmakers behind two well-liked recent horror offerings called Resolution and Spring. Out of those three... I liked Spring. I kind of don't get the love that Resolution got, and I definitely don't get the love that The Endless got via other's folks reviews at Tribeca. It just felt like a poorly acted, "somewhat clever every ten minutes or so" episode of Lost to me. (But read my review, I go into more depth over there.) That said they made a good trailer for the movie, using a single scene from the film, so you can watch that below and judge for thyself:
.

.
The Endless is one of the films that got picked up at the Fest and it is apparently getting an actual release of some kind in early 2018 (no idea why they'd hold off for an entire year but whatever) so stay tuned for that. Anyway I'll do a round-up of all my Tribeca reviews (and perhaps share a few thoughts on the movies I didn't get to review) soon so stay tuned for that.

I was looking for an "in" to share the new and enormous photo-shoot of Brad Pitt for GQ that wasn't just "Here's Brad Pitt forty-fucking-times" and this morning Twitter gave it to me - somebody noticed (I lost track of the tweet) that photographer Ryan McGinley shot Brad wearing the same sweater-vest that he recenty shot Harry Styles wearing! And we have a contest! (click to embiggen)

.
I realize it makes me sound like what the kids call "a fuddy-duddy" when I admit I don't get Harry Styles appeal at all, but I don't get Harry Styles' appeal at all. Zayn, Zayn I get. Harry - not a wink. Anyway perhaps y'all disagree, and that's what this contest is here for. As for Brad he's a little thin these days but he's also in his mid-goddamn-50s for goddamn's sake and he is still one hundred percent fuckable, so I'll cut him some slack. And now the main course - hit the jump for a full twenty-six more more shots...

Take Me Down Like I'm A

Did you guys hear the news? Dijda? Dijda?  Brian De Palma is making another movie! And not just any old movie - he's making a "cat and mouse" crime-thriller (aka what has come to be known by people who know as "a Brian De Palma Movie") that will star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Christina Hendricks as buddy cops out to solve the murder of Nikolaj's former partner slash Christina's former lover. It's called Domino, it was written by the writer of the "Norwegian gay sailor porn" flick Kon-Tiki, and it will feature lush Spanish scenery and probably Christina Hendricks wearing inappropriate police heels. The following gif sums up my reaction (and you can ask my boyfriend -- this was the first reference I made upon reading this awesome news last night):

For those of you who think that gif means
something bad, you suuuuure don't know me.

Give Me Venom Or Give Me Venom

Kind of dumbfounded that I still haven't seen Venom, the 1981 thriller starring Klaus Kinski and Oliver Reed (!!!!!!!!) which is about, and I quote straight from IMDb, "Terrorists in the process of kidnapping a child get trapped in a house with an extremely deadly snake." I mean...! Starring these two! Any of you seen it? The problem with this sort of movie is it's always a gamble whether any of the off-screen nuttery is translated to an entertainingly bad movie, or if it's just a boring bad movie.

Still stories of the behind-the-scenes drama are great - if you scan down to the end of this highly entertaining recap of the movie they've collected loads of the stories, some from bios of Kinski but mostly from an audio-commentary by the director  Piers Haggard. Like how this is another movie that Tobe Hooper got replaced on after shooting nine days (similar to the rumors about Poltergeist in this same time period). Or that Klaus Kinski turned down a role in Raiders of the Lost Ark to do this movie!!! But mostly the fun comes reading how Reed tormented Kinski on the set:

"Oliver used to amuse himself by going to Klaus Kinski’s trailer and shaking it – cos Ollie was as strong as an ox – and shaking it and saying… “Oh, you fucking Nazi bastard! Nasty Nazi bastard!” And then Kinski would come out, you know, trembling with rage and swearing back as best he could.”

Boys, boys - you're both gigantic assholes! Anyway this movie just got dropped onto a fancy blu-ray edition a couple of months back, so let's all go watch it together!

A pair of pictures from behind-the-scenes of Matt Bomer's cover-shoot for Out magazine have popped up on Instagram and they are delightful for displaying with full vim n' vigor that given the opportunity no one can keep their giddy hands off of Matt Bomer, no way, no how. Above is the shoot's stylist Grant Woolhead being perfectly handsy, and below it's photographer Doug Inglish wrapping up an armful. Let's hope the shoot just turned into a big gay orgy from there and they kept taking pictures, then.

A Nice Treat For Us

"It just happened! It was all like in a dream and it felt so good – the response of people was just so energising and took us away. And of course people like to see us making out together and we thought it would just be a nice treat for them.

It was in the moment. [If] you see some people, you connect with each other and you feel something, you should just do it. Like on a party, you try things out and let things happen because it feels right. It’s not that we wanted to show off or show people how we really feel about each other; it’s not about that. It’s more about using this energy that was really heavy at Sao Paulo Pride and giving it back."

That is Max Riemelt talking to Attitude about the awesome spectacle he made with his Sense8 co-star Brian J. Smith (and the rest of them, honestly - they all went at it) during Gay Pride in Brazil last year. (Video here!) He also talks about his penis and sex a lot because he's talking to a gay publication so of course he does.

Anyway today's a terrible day in the real world so let's focus on nice things, like the Sense8 cast making out and stuff. The second season of the show premieres on Netflix tomorrow!!! I know what I'm doing this weekend, then. Have you seen the brand new trailer?

Yeah, here's the brand new trailer:

Hello! I've been amused all week by the hard 90s costumes that Darren's been spotted wearing on the set of the "Versace Murder" season of Ryan Murphy's American Crime Story show, which is shooting right now in Miami, but I certainly wasn't expecting a spectacle like this to suddenly pop out in between the baggy jeans and, uh, baggy shirts. Somebody buy Ryan Murphy a drink tonight, on me. (Now can we get Edgar Ramirez up in this?) Hit the jump for six more shots...

When I google "rowing team 1940" nowhere do I find real life rowing teams wearing anything half as obscene as what Tyrone Power and his pals are wearing in the opening of the 1940 film Johnny Apollo, but I suppose that's the magic of the movies! And Tyrone Power's contract, no doubt. I haven't seen this whole film (have you? -- it's all on YouTube) but man these first few minutes are gay.

That old queen desperate to photograph the young hunks in their skimpy outfits, and the way Tyrone is protected and shielded (and man-handled) like a pretty little thing by the big strong man whos weeps in. But the best part...
.
... is how his bucolic man on man on man on man on man on man romping's cut short and he stares forlornly out the window to watch boys being boys on boys. No more sweetly innocent gay play for you, Tyrone. Oh well. Ya gotta grow up some day. Speaking of a Happy Birthday to Tyrone Power - he was born 103 years ago today. (No he's not still alive.)

I Quit Smoking Nine Years Ago Today

Tis that time again, folks -- every year on May 5th we celebrate the anniversary of my having quit smoking on this day in the year 2008. How do we celebrate it? We celebrate by posting a great big gallery of beautiful men making smoking look like the sexiest goddamned thing on the planet. Yes we know this is a weird way to celebrate, but we're weird.

You know this. Anyway if you'd like to peruse the former galleries you can do so right at this link. (I have finally, after nine years of this, giving the posts their own tag. Nine seemed like a good enough number.) I can't believe we're working towards 10 years smoke-free now - that's basically as long as I smoked in the first place. (The first couple years smoking was just a thing I did when I went out drinking in college, so a "start date" is as hazy as smoke itself.)

I'm a quitter! A wonderful quitter! Hurray for me! But don't y'all be quitters - y'all go ahead and take a deep breath and hit the jumpand take in the great big lung-bursting gallery of nearly ninety pictures... (now that I save up pictures for these posts all year long they get bigger every time)...
