Gilbert: Every theatrical performance
is a contrivance by its very nature.
Sullivan: Yes, but this piece consists entirely
of an artificial and implausible situation.
Gilbert: If you wish to write a Grand Opera
about a prostitute, dying of consumption in a garret,
I suggest you contact Mr Ibsen in Oslo.
I am sure he will be able to furnish you
with something suitably dull.

A very happy 68th birthday to Jim Broadbent today.
Did you know he was in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace?

He was!

Vanity Fair has dropped their latest Star Wars issue and it's got a great big gallery of Annie Leibovitz portraits of actors in character (expect to cry over the Carrie Fisher ones) and of course the most exciting thing to see is Laura Dern in character (I don't know who she's playing, whether it's a secret or not, and I don't care - I am just always thankful for her, where ever, whenever), but seeing as how we've got two pairs of lookers, one dark-sided and one light, to ogle, I figured I'd ask (click pic to embiggen)...

Now that Game of Thrones is reaching its destination(s) I hope they don't forget what got us here -- meaning I hope they manage to stuff some patented sexposition into the last run of episodes. The full trailer for the barreling-forward seventh season (or half season or whatever) just dropped today and it's all meaningful rampart glances and battle-cries with only the splittest of split seconds devoted to the sexytimes. The above flash of Jacob Anderson is the only flesh we see. It's like when Alfie Allen got his cock cut off with it went the show's libido. I wanna see Jon Snow beating off while riding on top of a dragon, dammit! That's what I was promised! Wasn't it?

"There has to be some downside to being Kit Harington, right? It seems only fair. He's handsome, talented, smart, and so decent to the core that it's impossible not to like him. Maddening. The one thing we can do is saddle his character with a tiny pecker."

Speaking of A Game of Thrones (we just saw the new trailer for the show) Kit's on the cover of the new issue of Esquire, with a very fine besuited photo-shoot as you see here, and in the attached interview that quote above is from either show-runner David Benioff or DB Weiss therein (they always credit them as a duo) talking of Jon Snow's wee man member. I don't think Kit himself needs to worry judging by what we've seen (see here and here) but since he's got thatbutt -- Kit wins. Hit the jump for the rest of his Esquire shoot...

Good Morning, Matthias Again

I posted a really terrible quality version of Matthias Schoenaerts' video for T Magazinethe day it appeared in March of 2013 (good grief has it really been four years) and I meant to go back and fix that when the embeddable version appeared (The New York Times makes it difficult) but well apparently that instinct was lost unto time and here we are, yes four years later, doing just that.
.
.
But seeing as how it's just Matty rolling around in bed half-naked for a couple of minutes as shot through the legendary male-on-male gaze of photographer Bruce Weber this felt like something I needed to gif up properly, so hit the jump for a dozen plus of those...

Bonus! For those of you who stuck around here's a drawing I did of Matthias yesterday. Lucky youse! I actually think it's not half bad though, for being the first time I have ever attempted to sketch a real life person. I can tell it's him anyway.

In case you missed it last night in order to aid my mental health I did a mini-tweet-storm that was nothing but pictures of Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister and hot piece of ass. (Literally - look at dat ass.) If you click above or below (for some reason it got truncated) it should take you to the entire thread(s). We could all use a political fantasy these days and yes, I know Trudeau's not perfect, but he's not what we got. He is not what we got. Sigh.

A happy 47th birthday to the director Neil Marshall today -- it was announced that he's going to reboot the Hellboy franchise last week (with Stranger Things star David Harbour under the horn-stumps) to much fanboy consternation. As I said then, even though I'm totally Team Del Toro I've never been a huge fan of his Hellboy movies, so I'm fine with this news. Marshall hasn't made a motion picture in seven years! Whatever it takes to get him on the big screen again.

For all the posting I have done about the Baywatch movie (see here) the Baywatch movie was never a movie I was going to spend money on to go see in a movie theater, but something tells me that it'll do fine without me and my fifteen bucks (even if Dwayne Johnson still feels the need to whinerepeatedly on Twitter about critics being out of touch). Anyway I am guessing that some of you might take advantage of the holiday weekend and go see the movie; if you do let us know what you thought here in the comments.

I suppose I can also use this post as a heads-up that after today I will be off-line until Tuesday, so prepare yourselves - make sure you buy plenty of water and canned goods and batteries and porn. It'll be a slog but somehow we'll make it.

Who's Atomic You's Atomic That's Who's

A second trailer for Atomic Blonde - maybe probably my most anticipated movie of the summer - was released a couple of weeks ago and somehow slinked right by me; it's fine though because they're still not showing off James McAvoy in his black mesh tank-top yet which, save seeing the entire movie right now dammit, is all I need to get my grubby eyeballs on ASAP. There is however...

... a flash of mysterious mustachioed man-folk though that caught my grubby eye; for a quick second I thought that was Robert Pattinson but no, definitely not - he's not even in this movie. That said I have no idea who the actor is. Does anybody? Here's another glimpse from the trailer:

He's playing (according to the trailer anyway) the stock character in these kinds of movies of "The Dude who Charlize Loved And Lost And Who Now Haunts Her And Drives Her  Character On Her Brutal Vengeful Quest." IMDb doesn't list any character by that name though, so I'm lost.

But hey look there's Til Schweiger!

And Bill Skarsgard!
Here's the trailer:

Today I'd rather be...

... picking up Harry Shum Jr.

Doing that Darren Criss post earlier made me think of his Glee co-star Harry and once I start thinking about Harry it gets tough, not thinking about Harry. Especially with all the making out he apparently does with the also lust-worthy Matthew Daddario...

... on that Shadowhunters show. (I really need to watch that show.) So hit the jump for about twenty more shots (really very hot shots not to mention more kisses with Matthew Daddario at that) that we haven't posted before...

Can't Stop the Cocaine

The film-maker Jeffrey Schwartz, the documentarian who's focused his recent career on telling the gayest of gay stories -- he made Tab Hunter Confidential, I Am Divine, Vito (the doc on Celluloid Closet author Vito Russo), and Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon (the doc on porn star Jack Wrangler), amongst others -- has two projects coming up. He is making a doc on Showgirls (!!!) and he is making a doc about Allan Carr, the flamingly camp producer of Grease and Can't Stop the Music who crashed and burned on a turbulent sea of caftans and cocaine in the late 70s and early 80s. Here's an interview with Schwartz on the doc, which is already screening at fests around the country. (via)

I've been telling people for years that they need to read Party Animals: A Hollywood Tale of Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll Starring the Fabulous Allan Carr, the biography of Mr. Carr, it is an insane spectacle of Hollywood excess - well now's your chance. Buy your copy now before it goes out of stock like the book Feud was based on did.

The doc is titled The Fabulous Allan Carr and if anybody earned that gay title tis he. Anyway when I went looking up this project I also stumbled upon this fun story told by Steve Guttenberg in his own biography about the auditioning process for Can't Stop the Music gig:

“Allan, 350 pounds of cynicism and creativity, sat on a couch in a caftan, a flowing one-piece tent that covered almost all of his body….I tried not to notice that he wasn’t wearing underwear. ” ‘Turn around. Let me see your tush.’ I did. Is this what I have to do to get a job? ” ‘Do you have any aversion to wearing a sock in your pants? Enough.’ He clapped his hands like a sultan and his yes-men ushered me out.” Well, Allan must have liked what he saw, because Guttenberg got the job–but not without a warning. The actor’s agent urged him, “Whatever you do, don’t be alone with Allan. He’s a grabber!”

When I saw that today was the 40th anniversary of Star Wars I remembered that we'd celebrated The Movies of 1977 already in our "Siri Series" and I went to see what other movies would be turning 40 this year and lo behold whaddya know Robert Altman's magnificently strange and unsettling film 3 Womenwas also released in theaters on this very day, May 25th, in the year 1977. I realize that Star Wars changed the movies, period, and as such should be honored... but I'm more excited to celebrate  3 Women. Let's all watch it tonight!

In other anniversary news John Waters' film Desperate Living was released on May 27th 1977, meaning it turns 40 this weekend. DL's a mixed bag but its opening scenes of Mink Stole having an epic suburban meltdown -- "Tell your mother I hate her! Tell your mother I hate you!" -- are among the director's greatest, and there's lots of rancid lesbionic fun to be had off in Mortville.
.

.
In order to celebrate Desperate Living we can do better than just re-watching the movie, though -- opening today at the La Mama Galleria gallery here in New York is a show called "Lost Merchandise of the Dreamlanders," which is filled with artist renditions of what movie merch for John Waters' movies would've (should've) looked like - there are apparently action figures and and sheet sets and all kinds of goodies! Hip hip hooray for our collective cheap climaxes!!

Today is the 90th birthday of The Greatest Beef That Ever Caked, Clint Walker - he's best known for turning a whole bunch of little boys into unrepentant queers via the TV Western Cheyenne in the late 1950s and 60s. Apparently there was a rumor that Clint's contract demanded he get shirtless every single episode of the show to showcase the reason he was hired...

... and he was worth every penny. You can see a lot more of Clint right here. Clint, I hope where ever you are today and whatever you're doing that you appreciate all the joy you brought to the world. Such big and broad-shouldered and furry joy. And here's a collection of some of Clint's random shirtless Cheyenne scenes:

Today I'd rather be...

... hearing the ocean with Pablo Schreiber.

I can't quite hear it yet, Pablo!
Bring it closer! CLOOOOSEERRRRR.

Anyway shame on us on two counts - number one there've been several pictures worth sharing posted to Mr. Schreiber's Instagram over the past month that we're just now getting to, and number two we haven't watched this week's episode of American Gods yet. We'll make up for the second part tonight, but we can do something about the first part right this second! Hit the jump for ten more pictures...
