Ewan's Down For Some Red Rum

All these years and I still haven't read my copy of Doctor Sleep, Stephen King's 2013 sequel to The Shining - will them casting Ewan McGregor in the movie version do it? Will my Trainspotting amour finally shove me over the edge? Probably! Stay tuned. Anyway yes tis true the Moulin Rouge crooner and premiere Scottish cock-rocket himself is going to play Growed Up Danny Torrance in the movie says Variety. I think Ewan is actually fantabulous casting if you've got Danny Lloyd on the mind...

I can totally see it. Even better is the news, which isn't news since we already knew this but the reminder, anyway - that Gerald's Game director Mike Flanagan is still attached - we expect good things from Flanagan since he's given us good things basically every time he's gone up to bat so far. Anyway I've avoided reading too much about what the story of Doctor Sleep is since I've been meaning to read the book for half a decade, so you got me. Something tells me something bad happens? Just a hunch.

There is a gigantic wall postered down near my office with an advertisement for the show Condor starring Jeremy-spawn Max Irons, but I don't know what the show is or is about. Do you? I'm running super late this morning so I'm not even going to pretend to google that shit. Here's Max getting his butt out on the first episode of whatever the fuck this show is. Hit the jump and enjoy...

An Orange Shirt For Pride

It's Pride Month here in the US which means that we're finally getting the BBC miniseries Man in an Orange Shirt that I told y'all about way way way back in August of last year when it aired over there - it's weird, it doesn't feel like it's been ten months since then, but things like Julian Morris and Oliver Jackson Cohen having lot of gay sex tends to... stick. Anyway the show's very fine (most especially the first half with Olly & James McArdle) and I recommend viewing. It airs on Sunday night on PBS. And then you don't even have to wait to bring it home - it hits blu-ray on Tuesday

I don't want you guys to think I haven't been doing anything all day - I've got a great big something coming for you a little later tonight, so stay tuned. Until then let's quick wish Louis a happy birthday today through this glorious display of his ooh-la-la French Boy Curls. I envy his hair so, I do. And we were just talking about him and his sleazy mustache in Saint Laurent on Monday -- click here if you missed that. Happy 35, Louis!

Army of Maniac Cops

I don't think any of us appreciate how good Bruce Campbell looks in William Lustig's classic 1988 B-movie Maniac Cop - I've posted about it myself before but, still. It deserves repeating. More repeating. I got to see the movie projected on 35mm with Mr. Lustig there for a Q&A last night at the Roxy Cinema just around the corner from my office and man that movie is just a good time at the movies. They're screening the print again tonight - it's the director's own copy! - along with the sequel, if you're free and open to fun things I recommend it. For fun. And here's a video I took of Lustig telling a little story last night:

Giving the Devil Its Due (Date)

I want you to click on the above image and really take in the perfection of that shot from Rosemary's Baby - I was skipping around the film last night in order to grab some images of "Monumental Horror Images" to send my friend Sean who was doing a Twitter thread about that idea and when I started really basking in that shot for a minute I became obsessed.
.
.
There are eleven people in that frame up top (not including the devil baby in that crib) and they're all looking in different directions and experiencing that moment in different ways and yet our eye is relaxed and curious as it drifts about that stage. And at the same time everything points straight towards that black bassinet. All the shadows, all the lines. Wham.

Anyway as we noted earlier this week the film, my favorite, just turned 50 and over at The Film Experience the celebration's gotten that precise - three of us have split the movie into thirds and are live-blogging the experience of watching it. Last night the first third went up (see that here) and tonight comes my third - click over here to read my take on the middle portion of the movie, from Devil Impregnation to Good Ol' Boy Hutch's Funeral. It's an interesting patch of the movie  I'm glad I got to tackle, with several key sequences that you might be tempted to glance past at first but which are vital to the film's still awesome power.

Plus I get to rhapsodize about John Cassavetes a bunch.

Y'all caught up with Claws right? You took my recommendations, plural, you watched the first season, and then you had the common sense to see it's one of the funniest strangest and somehow sweetest things on TV right now, and so now you're addicted... right? Good. The first two episodes of the second season have been as batshit enchanting as ever, introducing an already legendary in my mind performance from Franka Potente as a colorful (understatement!) Georgian Mob Boss - we've adored Franka since Run Lola Run and been dismayed at how under-served she's been in the years since so this is a treat.

And then of course there's Jack Kesy seen here as the affable douche-bag Roller, be still my "heart." (Although we are all just waiting for Jane Adams to show back up to torment him, right?) Gah this show. I love it so. Y'all better be watching! I'm so tired of things I love going away (cue the sad strings)...

Orange Shirts For Everybody

So did y'all watch Man in an Orange Shirton PBS last night? I wanna hear your thoughts! The above picture comes via an interview with Julian for Out magazine about Orange Shirt - at first I thought I'd posted that shot before but it's actually a slight variant of a shot posted back here, so it's new! Hooray for new pictures of Julian. (Thx.) Anyway I know I've played Amateur Sleuth when it comes to Julian's private life to a weird obsessive extent before but this bit from this Out interview (referring to his character) really stuck out to me:

"Does Adam have a sex addiction?” Morris ponders. “I think he’s unable to have a relationship. Then again, should gay men lead lives that mimic heterosexual lives?”

Is that a question a straight man would ponder? That doesn't really feel like the sort of question a straight person would openly ponder, not even one that's played a gay character. I mean that's not even precisely the struggle that his character is grappling with in the show, at least not as I read it. Adam's problem was more with needing to feel worthy of love. Anyway all that word-picking-apart aside tell me your thoughts on Man in an Orange Shirt in the comments if you feel inspired, and don't forget the film hits blu-ray tomorrow if you wanna grab a copy too. ETA Julian posted a few behind-the-scenes pictures on his Instagram...

I think if I slinked back through our Keanu Reeves Archives far enough I'd find I've posted the promotional pictures of Keanu and co-star Carl Marotte selling their stage musical called WolfBoy in 1984 before, but posting them again... well, it hardly seems a crime now does it? I posted them all over on the Tumblr, click over for more. In related news today's "Beauty vs Beast" at The Film Experience is Keanu-flavored, so head right on over there to get a taste. In the immortal words of Keanu's one-time and future co-star Winona Ryder, "Lick it up, baby. Lick it up."

I imagine we're going to get a shit-ton of John Waters interviews over the next week leading up to the release of Criterion's fancy-pants blu-ray edition of his masterpiece Female Trouble next Tuesday, but this... well, this is the first. Newsweek chatted with him and per usual John's always worth your time, go read it. He says they found unseen footage from the film! But here's a bit where they asked him the eternal question, what he's working on right now and if that might involve a movie:

"I’m writing my book, Mr. Know it All. But yes, I keep getting paid to write movies and then they don’t make them. Recently, HBO paid me very well to write a sequel to Hairspray, which I liked, and we’ll see if it ever happens. I’m still in the movie business, I’m not just shown in the movie business. And then all my old ones keep coming out. The books do better than the movies. Just keep telling stories—it doesn’t matter."

HBO has a John Waters script for Hairspray 2 and they haven't made it? WTF. Why aren't we storming the HBO offices right now?

Yesterday's anomaly of me posting one of these posts about a show I am actually actively watching has come to a quick end and we're back to talking about another show I know nothing about - in this case a show called Goliath, which apparently gifted itself a little James Wolk arc - I don't think he's permanent on the show since he's off to make Kevin Williamson's new show (opposite Billy Magnussen!) but they made the most out of him while he was around...

So do you any of you watch Goliath? It's got a stellar cast including Billy Bob Thornton, William Hurt, Mark Duplass, Molly Parker, Maria Bello, Olivia Thirlby, and Jimmy's (mostly cropped out) scene-partner Nina Arianda. Them's a lot of good actors. Oh and it's David E. Kelley's new show! (I am learning every one of these facts from IMDb as I write this.) Y'all tell me how the show is and I'll take us after the jump for two dozen James Wolk gifs, how's that sound...

Your Day in Crotch Shots

Well the day is young and who knows what we'll see before it's through but for now here first thing this morning I've got a soothing pair of pictures of Actors We Adore putting their best face (not face) forward -- there first is Armie Hammer via this chat with the actor at Vogue. He's talking about the play he's about to perform on Broadway called Straight White Men, we told you about it previously here. That show starts on June 29th and I am praying I can sneak in somehow. And speaking of theater...

... we've got a new shot of Corey Stoll's leather-clad Iago from Shakespeare in the Park's current run of Othello, which the New York Times gave us astride their review. (Thx Mac.) We posted several pictures of Corey in costume the other week - click here to see them. I have seen half of the show - the night I went the second half got rained out. I'm going to try to win the lottery again to go back and watch the rest but I'm waiting for this little heat-wave we're in the middle of to pass... although the sweatier the better to watch Corey in those pants, maybe...

That right there is the first poster for the Creed sequel (via), which is sadly titled Creed II and not titled what this post is titled. But hey they gave us Michael B. Jordan's pecs so who are we to complain? The trailer is apparently striking tomorrow. Director Ryan Coogler is not returning for the sequel - he's off swimming in a pool of Black Panther money right now, one supposes. Anyway I didn't like the first Creed but I'm open to liking the second one... especially with this dude playing Dolph Lundgren's son.

10 Off My Head: Siri Says 2011

It's been a couple of weeks since the last time the little lady inside of our telephone whispered sweet nothings into our ear and gave us the chance to do a new entry in our "Siri Says" series but lo behold today she's back, and she said the number "11" and so lo behold we're looking to The Movies of 2011 today. It's only been seven years since we celebrated and dissected that twelve months of cinema with our Golden Trousers, you can read through all of those at this link - or head straight to my Top Ten right here - but things have shifted around some so let's update where we stand as of 2018.

The problem with some of these are that I just haven't seen them in seven years. But doesn't that say something, that I haven't felt the need to revisit some, while others I've revisited several times since? Like I'm sure if I re-watched Martha Marcy May Marlene or Take Shelter (both movies that were in my original top ten) today I'd remember what I loved about them but right this minute they're foggy, my recollections. So they've dropped off. Anyway that's all we're doing. Shaking out my wobbly brain at this exact moment...
