A Manual For Cleaning Out My Wallet
I'm working under the assumption that all of you have already read last week's big news that Cate Blanchett will indeed officially be starring in Pedro Almodovar's English-language debut feature-film called A Manual for Cleaning Women, which has long been a rumor -- I first posted about the project in February of 2020 when I also first posted about Pedro making his English-language short-film debut with Tilda Swinton and The Human Voice. And we all know how that one turned out (i.e. incredible). Cleaning Women is based on Lucia Berlin's short-story collection of 43 stories (!!!) about different women with demanding jobs -- in my 2020 post I had Pedro quoted saying he'd narrowed it down to five of those stories for his film; no word on whether that's still the case now, and one wonders...
... will Cate be playing multiple characters like she did in Julian Rosefeldt's art installation film Manifesto in 2015? That ruled. But I guess we'll have to wait and see where Pedro's going. One doesn't worry about quality though, not with these folks at the helm. Quality's a goddamned given. Anyway I assume y'all saw this news last week but it's a Monday and I am distracted with other things so I'm sharing this news in hopes maybe it's news to you, or maybe we can just look at Cate for a second -- win win, baby.

Paul Mescal One Time
So have you guys watched The Lost Daughter yet?
Oliver Jackson-Cohen has shared some snaps from the THE LOST DAUGHTER set (great movie, now on Netflix!) -- that shot of him + Paul Mescal is a most bountiful gift #TheLostDaughterpic.twitter.com/mW8AK5Lam0

Pics of the Day
Put your lips together and make your best annoying ambulance siren sound, because I've got two new photos from Michael Bay's Ambulance for you today (via) -- a look at co-stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Jake Gyllenhaal above (and yes your mind should now be shrieking, "KISS! KISS! KISS!") and a look at solo Jake (unless you count the titular role as a character in the film, which maybe we should) down below. Ambulance is out on April 8th -- if you missed the trailer watch the trailer right here. (click to embiggen)

Good Morning, World
I realized yesterday when I saw this gif of Oscar Isaac in the fifth episode of his Scenes From a Marriage miniseries being passed around that I never finished that series? I think I made it to episode three and then we saw his penis and I sort of blacked out. Possibly until yesterday? Who even knows anymore honestly, but still I felt the need to share the above view all the same. And I guess I should probably go back and finish it sometime. This is what happens when you don't reply to my emails asking for screenings, PR people! My attention span is not good!

Chris Evans Five Times
It seems like all we ever get now of Chris Evans are outtakes from old photoshoots but I suppose, you know, there is a pandemic, everything hasn't caught up. The "Chris Evans Photoshoot Industry" is really struggling, you guys. I hope they were able to get some of that sweet government money last year -- nobody deserves it more, and let's schedule a prayer circle to get them back on their feet soon. So these shots today are from a 2019 shoot for Men's Journal (I posted a good one back at the time), see them all after the jump...

Great Moments in Movie Shelves #197
Over the weekend I -- and half of Film Twitter, judging by my timeline -- re-watched the four previous Scream films in preparation of this week's fifth film in the series, which is out on Friday (unfortunately only in theaters, which is pretty shitty of the studio in the middle of this omicron surge) and which I am seeing at a screening tonight. In a few hours really! I'm excited for the film, scared of going into a movie theater, it's all kinds of emotions. I did a small Twitter thread while re-watching the movies (see that here) but I set aside one bit of re-appreciation for today...
... namely the secret passageways in Scream 3 that are hidden behind a fake bookshelf! We love hidden passageways and will always stan for them -- Scream 3 is by far the worst series in the franchise so far (save its major saving grace, one Parker Posey, of course) but I do deeply love the setting of its finale, the creepy Hollywood mansion of Stab producer John Milton (played by Lance Henriksen, very clearly styled to be a meta Wes Craven).
When my favorite horror movie podcast The Gaylords of Darkness talked about the Scream franchise recently they dug into how ahead of its time the whole "Me Too" storyline of this movie was, predating the Harvey Weinstein reckoning by a full seventeen years give or take -- and this movie was produced by Harvey! It's kinda crazy they sneaked this storyline in there, and I fully buy that Wes did it on purpose, and that he made the John Milton character look like himself (and not Weinstein) on purpose. Wes' entire career is him grappling with guilt, especially in its latter half as it became more meta, injecting his own legacy, and his doubts thereabout, into the storytelling. Scream 3 might not be successful, but it is kinda fascinating.
Anyway I'm curious to see where the fifth film goes when I see it tonight -- stay tuned later this week for my review at Pajiba. For now here below is the latest trailer for the new movie, which you probably shouldn't even watch at this point. The movie's out in three days! Save yourselves!

The Spider Destination
First things first, hi Nicky D'Agosto. We miss you. Anyway it's been three years since we first heard official word that a sixth Final Destination movie was in the works, and given a pandemic happened in the middle of that I will forgive them their slow pace. You get a pass, guys. Just this once. But today, new news! And this dude involved has got some serious clout at the moment, so I'd think this will happen sooner rather than never -- it's said that Jon Watts, the director of all three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies (including that little thing No Way Home that just blasted the doors off the pandemic box office) is producing a sixth film based on a story-idea he has. Now this is how you use your power in Hollywood for good, not evil! Let's hope he brings with him a nice big fat budget for all of the blood-lettings.
When I'd posted about the sixth film back in 2019 it was two Saw writers were attached, so this is a big improvement -- one of the two writers tasked with turning Watts' treatment into a script today is Guy Busick, who wrote the latest Scream movie, but more importantly the super-fun horror flick Ready or Not back in '19. (He also worked on Castle Rock.) That's the kind of energy a Final Destination movie needs, not the stupid torture porn of the Saw films. Quick, nasty, and fun fun fun! That's the energy we need. Anyway if you had to guess what would you guess Watts' idea might be? And when one talks about "ideas" for this franchise one usually means the infamous opening sequences, where the characters cheat death the first time -- airplane and car and rollercoaster crashes and the like. What's even left? The Titanic?

Requisite Huzzah!
For some reason I thought we already knew that Hulu had renewed The Great for a third season, but seeing as how the news just showed up in my inbox and I never posted about it before I guess I'd just assumed that! So I'm glad to have my assumptions confirmed -- hell everybody at Hulu should be glad, because if they'd canceled The Great they would've heard about it. (Kind of like Sauron "heard about" the one ring melting in Mount Doom.)
Nicholas Hoult in black lace and pearls is my new religion pic.twitter.com/As1RA4HP9A
— Jason Adams (@JAMNPP) November 29, 2021
Have y'all caught up with the second season by now? And not just Nicky's butt scene, I mean. The whole thing? My love affair continues apace. I could watch ten seasons of it, although I will admit I am not really sure how much longer they can keep up having Catherine not kill Peter. It's sort of stretching thin, and I say that as a person who will literally gnash my teeth and rend my garments when and if they get there. Hoult's performance is just too much fun to lose. In a wildly random aside I also watched the Mads Mikkelsen film Riders of Justice over the holidays (also on Hulu) and the thought occurred to me -- wouldn't Mads be a perfect addition to The Great's cast? I guess it was seeing Gillian Anderson (his Hannibal co-star) show up as Elle's mom, but The Great needs some Mads, just as I need to make y'all vote on this dumb poll...

Good Morning, World
Is it really possible that Keanu Reeves did a sultry slutty hustler-tinged daguerrotype cover-shoot by Matthew Rolston for Interview Magazine in 1990 (circa My Own Private Idaho of course, but different from the issue that Keanu did with River Phoenix seen here) and I had never seen it until yesterday? Not only possible, but the devil's honest truth -- Interview posted one of their flashbacks on their site to it last night and I was like, "Wha huh?" Just like that. "Wha huh?" I even said it out loud and everything. If a Keanu wears short jean shorts and MNPP doesn't notice, did it really happen? A question eternal, finally answered. Yes, it not only exists -- it thrives. Hit the jump for all I could scavenge up...

You Win This Round, W Magazine
I was all set to share with you Jake Gyllenhaal's three photos from W Magazine's annual "Best Performances" issue just now and moan about how much I find W's aesthetic visually displeasing every year -- I always hate the costuming and mod-heavy whimsy of it, it always strikes me as too try-hard -- but then I went over to W to grab the link to Jake's piece and instead I saw the below shot of Anthony Ramos, and... well my moans found a new, different outlet. Unfortunately there's only one Anthony photo as best I can tell but it's good not to push our luck, let's just enjoy these ones. You can see all of their shoots, which also include Adam Driver and Tilda Swinton and Kristen Stewart and all of the usual suspects right here. I really recommend just clicking on this photo below and sparing yourself the time though:

West Marks the Spot
I was big-time in the tank for the director Ti West a decade ago when he dropped The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, two inspired and actually scary throwback-feeling fright flicks, but the past decade's been less kind -- his Koolaid-Cult movie The Sacrament was a mess, and I don't think I managed to force myself to watch his western In a Valley of Violence because a movie starring Ethan Hawke and John Travolta just ain't my bag. He's mostly been doing TV since then, with episodes of The Exorcist, Scream, Them, and Tales From the Loop (that last one I adore) under his belt, but this year marks his big-screen return with a movie called X, which will be released by no less than A24 in March and which just got a trailer...
X has very good concept...
"In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives."
... and it has a very good cast: Jenna Ortega is in the new Scream and I liked her a lot; Kid Cudi was surprisingly good on Luca Guadagnino's We Are Who We Are series; I love me some Martin Henderson (mmm Martin Henderson). And then (speaking of Guadagnino) there's the queen of them all, Miss Mia Goth! Post-Suspiria Mia is my everything, and I really don't understand why she's not in everything -- maybe she's been picky? She's just got such an astonishing look and vibe and you'd think everybody would be lining up to work with her. Let's hope this serves as a reminder...

I'm Gonna Gut You Like a Fish
(poster via) Well, it's here! My review of the fifth Scream film, foolishly not titled 5cream pronounced-five-scream, is up at Pajiba -- click on over to read it, if you dare! I think I did a pretty decent job not spoiling anything so you can read it before watching the film, but I do mention one or two plot specific things so I get it, your mileage it might vary, and I don't blame you. As a mega-fan of this franchise from way back if I hadn't already seen the movie myself I'd be wary, but there's nothing in my review that would've pissed me off to read beforehand, and I'm a good barometer for this kind of thing. It's also why I'm not saying much here in this post! But I will add another good reason to see the movie -- and there are several, since I dug it! --is 13 Reasons Why cutie Dylan Minnette, seen below, who in the movie looks transported in from the mid-90s and totally hit all my teen crush buttons. (PS I posted a few more photos of Dylan on the Tumblr.)

Pic of the Day
Even though this picture needed to be about a dozen times sluttier -- you can't even give us wet white tank tops? -- it is a photo of Patrick Wilson and (the now single!) Jason Momoa (and Aquaman director James Wan) celebrating the end of shooting their Aqua-sequel by dousing themselves, so I must post it all the same. You can tell they're all dunderheaded straight dudes because this is some half-assed thirst-trappin'. Anyway I liked about 50% of the first Aquaman an awful lot -- it had what ammounted to a Nicole Kidman Swiffer Commercial Fight after all! -- so I hope the sequel's even nuttier, and I also hope that the cancelation of the spin-off about those "Trench Monsters" means the "Trench Monsters" will show up here again, because that remains one of the greatest superhero movie action sequences ever put on film.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...
... you can learn from:
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016)
Lily: I am very seldom required to wear white by my employers. But, anyway, I always do. It has always been that wearing white reassures the sick that I can never be touched, even as darkness folds in on them from every side, closing like a claw.
A happy 40th birthday to the great Ruth Wilson today! There were several other projects I wanted to quote for her birthday but IMDb didn't have quotes listed from them, so I went with this 2016 horror film which I still have never seen somehow -- it was directed by Oz Perkins (aka Anthony Perkins' son) who also made the stylishly strange Gretel & Hansel a couple years back; I really should see this one, it's been on Netflix this entire time and everything.
As for Ruth if I was going to do a "The Moment I Fell For..." post for her it'd be a stage thing -- I saw her act with Jake Gyllenhaal in Nick Payne's play Constellations the year before this movie, in 2015, and she blew me away. I'd only been somewhat familiar with her before then -- she has a face you notice on-screen so she stood out in small roles in Anna Karenina and Suite Française, but I still have never seen her play Jane Eyre in the 2006 miniseries version. Is that worth looking up?
All that said my favorite Ruth role is an ongoing one -- her turn as Mrs. Coulter on HBO's His Dark Materials series -- which surprised me! She did not seem like the right casting for the role going in, but she's been truly exhilaratingly terrifying and weird on it; the best reason to watch the show at all. The third and final season is supposed to premiere sometime this year and I can't wait to see what skin-crawling antics she gets up to. What's your fave Ruth role?

Which is Hotter?
This morning I wished the Hemsworth brother they call Liam a happy birthday, but then not long after I realized that January 13th is actually chockablock with birthday hunkery, as it also marks the blessed births of Michael Peña, Orlando Bloom, Now Apocalypse fur-monster Beau Mirchoff, and the now-official-gay Julian Morris...
On top of Liam Hemsworth [full stop] today is also the birthday of Michael Peña, Orlando Bloom, Beau Mirchoff, and Julian Morris!!! Good grief somebody give them a group party, then oil me up and throw me into the middle of it pic.twitter.com/3LszcuqJGm

... that's quite the fantasy roster anyway, and it seems not right not to mark the occasion here on the site proper. So let's pit two of them against each other in a hotness fight to the death! For now we'll do it via a poll, but if they want to send me a video of themselves naked wrestling for the win I'll make sure to post that...
